Jun 2005 The body of Sheik Machouk Alkhaznawi, a Kurdish cleric, was returned to his family after authorities claimed that he had been kidnapped and killed by criminals. He had been missing for three weeks and some suspect that his disappearance was linked to the Syrian secret police. A few days later, protests broke out demanding an international investigation into the death of the Sheik. Protesters clashed with police, killing one officer. Others were injured or arrested.
